Darkham Weir
Darkham Weir, also known as Healand Weir, controls the level of the Torridge at the base of Darkham Wood at the eastern end of the Rosemoor property. It is the head weir for the canal leat which runs off the river at this point ensuring a constant water supply for the canal and New Town Mills. There is a commemorative stone set in the wall at the western end. New Town Mills, the canal, leat, and "The Dark Weir" feature prominently in the final chapters of the tale of Tarka the Otter where Tarka is hunted for a full day from the weir, up and down the river and canal, all the way to Weare Giffard where he and the lead hound meet their death at the turn of the tide.
This is Darkham Weir with plenty of fresh water coming down the river.
