New Town Mills
New Town Mills, built by Lord Rolle about the same time as the Rolle Bridge and the two new carriage roads leading south to link Torrington with Hatherleigh and Beaford and avoid the difficult crossing of the ancient packhorse bridge at Taddiport. The mills were supplied with water from the Stevenstone brook and the canal leat from Darkham Weir, upstream from Rosemoor.
This is an old postcard that appears to show Charlie Chaplin closing a gate, but across the river, you can see the New Town Mills with it's distinctive castellations.
